PDF compression is the process of reducing the amount of data stored inside a PDF while keeping the document usable. A PDF may contain text, vector graphics, fonts, metadata and raster images. In many image-heavy documents, the embedded images account for a significant part of the total file size.
Photos, screenshots and high-resolution graphics can make a PDF much larger than necessary for normal screen viewing. Re-compressing suitable images can reduce the amount of image data stored in the document.
A scanned PDF can contain an image for every page. If those page images were created at a high resolution, the document can become large. Image optimization may provide more reduction than it would for a text-only PDF.
Text and vector content is often already relatively compact. A text-heavy PDF may therefore show only a small size reduction after optimization. A small change does not necessarily mean the compressor failed.
If a PDF was previously compressed or created with efficient image settings, there may be little additional data to remove. WebAuzar avoids returning a larger optimized file when the rebuilt result is not smaller than the original.
If possible, compress the original document rather than repeatedly compressing an already-compressed copy. Every lossy image recompression can change image quality, so starting from the highest-quality practical source gives you more control over the final document.
Scanned pages, photographs and screenshots are common reasons a PDF becomes large. A document with hundreds of text pages can be smaller than a short document containing several high-resolution photographs. Image-heavy PDFs are therefore often the best candidates for automatic compression.
File-size requirements vary between email services, application portals and websites. Always check the actual downloaded file size when a service has a strict limit. Do not rely on a promised percentage reduction because different PDFs contain different types and amounts of data.
Compression can affect the quality of embedded raster images. For contracts, certificates, design files, archival scans and other important documents, keep the original PDF and use the compressed copy for sharing or uploading when appropriate.
WebAuzar's current compressor is designed for automatic optimization, not an exact target-size workflow. For example, if an application requires a PDF to be below 100KB, the correct workflow is to compress the PDF and then verify the downloaded file size. Some PDFs simply do not have enough removable data to reach a very small target without changing their content or image quality more aggressively.
The compression workflow runs in your browser. Your PDF is not sent to a WebAuzar compression endpoint for processing, which is useful when working with personal documents, applications, invoices or other files you do not want to upload to a third-party compression service.
